His
Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, God
bless his soul, is one of the greatest men who
established the United Arab of Emirates. He was the
founder and ruler of Dubai. He worked to turn Dubai
into the modern, economically robust international
city it is today.He was
born in 1906 and began ruling Dubai in 1958. During
his tenure, he did great work in Dubai. He started
working with His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al
Nahayan in unifying the Emirates and succeeded in
working to worlds the creation of the United Arab of
Emirates in 1971.
His
Highness Sheikh Rashid approved many projects to
help Dubai become a great city. He thought of the
port as it is an important element in getting the
trading between the countries easier. In 1967, to
promote trade between countries, government started
building the Dubai port. Initially, the port was to
have four berths, but as his highness considered the
future, he expanded the port to thirty-five berths.
Today this huge port bears His Highness Sheikh
Rashid’s nameand is considered one of the important
ports in Dubai.In
addition, His Highness oversaw the improvement of
transportation to and from of Dubai. He led the
construction of an airport in Jebal Ali in 1959.
Later, he also oversaw the airport’s expansion.
Today, Dubai is one of the world’s greatest air
travel and air cargo cities.
Under
His Highness Sheikh Rashid’s watchful eye the Al
Maktoum Bridge that connected Deira and Bur Dubai
was built. His Highness demonstrated great vision
for transforming Dubai the desert into Dubai the
international city. He passed away on October, 7
1990, but he left behind a successful city .
Sheikh
Rashid helped Dubai overcome many obstacles and
created an easier life for his people. He knew that
oil would not last forever, and a strong economy was
needed to ensure that Dubai would never have
difficult times. He cared for us as a father. He
built this city with vision and wisdom.
